D’s current research, studio furniture in New Zealand, began with a Diploma in Crafts and Design that included designing and making wood furniture. This was followed by an MFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. D also has degrees in architecture and sociology from Victoria University of Wellington.
After graduation from RISD in 2000 D taught interior design and built a freelance writing portfolio for magazines such as American Craft, Ceramics: Art & Perception, Fine Woodworking, Metalsmith, Surface Design Journal and Woodcraft. She returned to New Zealand in 2006 where, again, she taught interior design and continued to write, about New Zealand craft: her profile of the World of Wearable Art Awards appeared in the Jan/Feb 2009 issue of Fiberarts.
