Curriculum vitae

Mark McGuire moved to Dunedin from Toronto in 1993 and joined the Department of Design Studies in 1994. He studied Architecture and Fine Art in Canada before setting up Mediatrix Inc., a design and consulting company based in Toronto. As well as working as a graphic designer, he guided several book and magazine publishers through the transition from conventional to digital design and production. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Canada, as well as a Masters in Information Science from Otago and a PhD in Media Studies from the University of Auckland.

His research interests include online communities, digital media theory and practice, and soundscape design. His recent publications focus on 3D online communities, podcasting, computer games, and the relationship between image and text. Mark teaches primarily in communication design and new media theory and practice. He is interested in interdisciplinary approaches to teaching and research and he contributes to papers and projects in Planning, Performing Arts, Information Science, and Science Communication.
